Use Caller ID with CapTel
If you subscribe to the Caller ID feature from your telephone service, you will now be able to view Caller ID information directly on the CapTel phone display window. Previously, Caller ID subscribers had to check their Caller ID box to see who was calling.
CapTel also now features True Caller ID, which displays the name and/or number of the person calling, depending on the type of Caller ID service you subscribe to. In the past, if you had Caller ID, you would only see the Captioning Service telephone number displayed whenever a person called, because all calls are routed through the Captioning Service to become captioned.
The new Caller ID improvements go into effect automatically after an initial call is placed through the Captioning Service. If you are a Caller ID subscriber and you do not see Caller ID information on your CapTel telephone, please contact CapTel customer service for assistance at 1-888-269-7477 (Voice/CapTel) or 1-800-482-2424 (TTY). Navigate phone menu systems with CapTel
It happens almost every day: all you want to do is talk to a real person, and instead you get a barrage of recorded alternatives, like, "For sales, press 1; for service, press 2; for hours and location, press 3..." and so on. These systems, called Automated Voice Response Systems, are no problem for the CapTel!
- You may enter a menu selection on your CapTel number keypad at any time during a recorded menu, even though captioned text is still in progress.
- You don't have to wait to hear the entire menu before making your choice, enabling your call to be directed correctly as quickly as possible.
- Many automated systems allow you to enter a specific extension ("If you know your party's extension, you may enter it now," for example). As with "press 1, press 2" systems, the CapTel allows you to simply enter the desired extension with no waiting.
At CapTel, we can't make automated systems go away, but we have worked to make navigating them as fast and convenient as possible!

Use a calling card with CapTel
You can enjoy connecting with family, friends, and business associates using your CapTel phone with a calling card. You can purchase calling cards at a variety of retail and convenience stores with various minute allowances. To make a CapTel call using a calling card:
- Dial the calling card's 800 number using your CapTel phone.
- CapTel service connects you to the calling card's 800 phone number.
- Input the calling card information on the CapTel number keypad directly as instructed.
- You will then be asked to enter the phone number of the person you wish to call.
- Your conversation will be paid for via the calling card.
Exception:
Calling an 800 calling card number, then dialing the Toll-Free CapTel Service number (as with Voice in or CapTel-to-CapTel calls). You may receive a message saying your call cannot be completed as dialed because the system recognizes that billing charges do not apply for an 800 to 800 number. Try dialing the Captioning Service FIRST, the calling card SECOND, and then the number you are calling. People who call you can also follow this method to use a calling card when placing their call to you.

Pick up a CapTel call from another phone
If you share your household with hearing family members or friends, chances are you have had the experience of someone else picking up a captioned call meant for you, on a phone other than the CapTel. If this happens, don't panic!
All you have to do is pick up your CapTel phone, and then have the other phone hung up as soon as possible, so that a connection to the captioning service can be established. If this is done in a timely fashion, within a minute or so after the call was first picked up on the non-CapTel phone, your captioned call should connect with no problem!
The other person in your household will hear a series of beeping tones over the line when they accidentally pick up your captioned phone call on a different telephone. This is a good hint to know that the call should be answered on the CapTel phone instead.
